Chemistry 20 - Electron pairing and multiple bonds
LESSON = canonical instructional unit covering official Chemistry 20 outcomes. SESSION = bootcamp delivery event. A bootcamp session may overlay several Unit A lessons.
Enhanced overlay: Weeks 1-2 bootcamp session-06.html may be taught with this lesson. The bootcamp is not the whole course.

Official outcome text
relate electron pairing to multiple and covalent bonds
Learning intention
Meet 20-A2.3k with instruction, practice, and a check. The 10-session bootcamp does not replace this lesson.
Success criteria
- Restate the outcome in classroom language without swapping in a different unit’s template.
- Complete the worked-style task for this outcome.
- Name the lab setting (classroom-supervised / teacher demo / dataset or simulation / forbidden).
Teaching
A covalent bond is a shared pair. A double bond is two shared pairs; a triple bond is three. Lewis octets are often completed by multiple bonds when a single pair is not enough (O2, N2, CO2, C2H4).
Worked example
N2: each N has 5 valence electrons; a triple bond plus a lone pair on each N gives octets. O2: double bond. CO2: two double bonds from C to each O.
Guided practice
- Lewis for HCN: show the triple bond. Do not generate HCN gas - paper only. Do not copy N2/O2/CO2 unchanged.
- Near-miss: single bonds only in CO2 because “carbon wants four singles.” Mark the first wrong line.
Independent practice
- Compare bond order in N2 vs O2 vs F2.
- Two sentences: pairing and octets in a triple bond.
- Electron count for CO2 (16) vs a false 20-electron structure.
Diagram / whiteboard

Checks for understanding
Use the formative evidence below as the exit check for this outcome. Correct the misconception named in this lesson before praising.
Misconception to repair
Counting a double bond as “one electron pair” when checking octets, or drawing NaCl as a shared pair.
Safety and lab register
Setting: classroom-supervised only for Session 04 conductivity (NaCl / sucrose / ~5% vinegar, 9 V LED or school probe). All other Unit A work is paper, models, data cards, or approved simulation. Forbidden: bleach+acid, bleach+ammonia, flames, tasting, home copy of Session 04, concentrated acids/bases, generating Cl2. AI Tutor must not invent labs outside CHEM20_LOW_RESOURCE_LAB_REGISTER.csv.
Alberta Poison Control if a real exposure is occurring: 1-844-764-7669. The AI Tutor is not a poison centre.
Formative evidence
Lewis sketches: N2 and CO2 with bond orders labelled.
This is not a diploma. Mastery needs instruction + activity + check.
AI Tutor / human tutor
Ground on 20-A2.3k. No false praise. No invented procedures. No silent skip to a different unit. Human tutor if the student describes mixing bleach, tasting, or flames.
