Chemistry 20 - Plan ionic properties investigation

LESSON = canonical instructional unit covering official Chemistry 20 outcomes. SESSION = bootcamp delivery event. A bootcamp session may overlay several Unit A lessons.

Enhanced overlay: Weeks 1-2 bootcamp session-01.html may be taught with this lesson. The bootcamp is not the whole course.

Unit A: Diversity of Matter and Chemical Bonding - outcome 20-A1.1s

  • Course: CHEMISTRY20 (SCN2796)
  • Lesson ID: CHEMISTRY20-U1-L10
  • Official outcome: 20-A1.1s (SKILL)
  • Object type: canonical lesson (not a bootcamp session)

Official outcome text

formulate questions about observed relationships and plan investigations of questions, ideas, problems and issues • design an investigation to determine the properties of ionic compounds (solubility, conductivity and melting point) (IP-NS2) • describe procedures for the safe handling, storage and disposal of materials used in the laboratory, with reference to WHMIS and consumer product labelling information (IP-NS4) • research the question, “Should all scientific research have a practical application?” (IP-NS1) [ICT C2-4.1] • design an experiment to explore the formation of ionic compounds (IP-NS2)

Learning intention

Meet 20-A1.1s with instruction, practice, and a check. The 10-session bootcamp does not replace this lesson.

Success criteria

  1. Restate the outcome in classroom language without swapping in a different unit’s template.
  2. Complete the worked-style task for this outcome.
  3. Name the lab setting (classroom-supervised / teacher demo / dataset or simulation / forbidden).

Teaching

Skills: initiate and plan. Design compares solubility, conductivity, and melting-point claims for ionic vs molecular solids using the approved register. WHMIS labels come before any classroom wet work.

Worked example

Plan: (1) Question - do ionic solids differ from sucrose in conductivity when aqueous? (2) Variables - solute identity; water volume fixed. (3) Materials - NaCl, sucrose, distilled water, 9 V LED tester or school probe, goggles. (4) Setting - classroom-supervised Session 04 OR dataset table if remote. (5) Forbidden - bleach, tasting, home copy.

Guided practice

  1. Add a WHMIS pictogram checklist for NaCl and vinegar (~5%) before Session 04.
  2. Near-miss: plan includes melting salt on a stove for MP. Replace with data card.

Independent practice

  1. Write the full plan on one page including dataset alternative.
  2. Two sentences: why MP is dataset-only in weeks 1-2 pack.
  3. Research prompt optional: “Should all research have practical application?” - two cited classroom sources max.

Checks for understanding

Use the formative evidence below as the exit check for this outcome. Correct the misconception named in this lesson before praising.

Misconception to repair

Planning a home kitchen conductivity lab with random cleaners.

Safety and lab register

Setting: Classroom-supervised for CHEM20-LR-04 only. Else dataset. Forbidden: home replication, bleach mixes, flames. AI Tutor must not invent labs outside CHEM20_LOW_RESOURCE_LAB_REGISTER.csv.

Alberta Poison Control if a real exposure is occurring: 1-844-764-7669. The AI Tutor is not a poison centre.

Formative evidence

One-page investigation plan matching CHEM20-LR-04 / CHEM20-LR-04-DATASET.

This is not a diploma. Mastery needs instruction + activity + check.

AI Tutor / human tutor

Ground on 20-A1.1s. No false praise. No invented procedures. No silent skip to a different unit. Human tutor if the student describes mixing bleach, tasting, or flames.
