Chemistry 20 - Ionic lattice properties
LESSON = canonical instructional unit covering official Chemistry 20 outcomes. SESSION = bootcamp delivery event. A bootcamp session may overlay several Unit A lessons.
Enhanced overlay: Weeks 1-2 bootcamp session-03.html may be taught with this lesson. The bootcamp is not the whole course.

Official outcome text
explain that ionic compounds form lattices and that these structures relate to the compounds’ properties; e.g., melting point, solubility, reactivity
Learning intention
Meet 20-A1.6k with instruction, practice, and a check. The 10-session bootcamp does not replace this lesson.
Success criteria
- Restate the outcome in classroom language without swapping in a different unit’s template.
- Complete the worked-style task for this outcome.
- Name the lab setting (classroom-supervised / teacher demo / dataset or simulation / forbidden).
Teaching
Ionic compounds form extended 3-D lattices. High melting points follow from strong electrostatic attractions throughout the solid. Many ionic solids dissolve in water as mobile ions; the solid does not conduct, the molten or aqueous ions do. Reactivity (e.g. with water) depends on the ions, not on a molecular shape.
Worked example
NaCl(s): high MP data card (~801 °C), soluble, conducts when aqueous (Session 04 / table), not as a dry crystal. Contrast sucrose: molecular lattice with weak IMFs, lower MP, does not conduct.
Guided practice
- From the data card only: why NaCl(s) does not conduct but NaCl(aq) can, while sucrose(aq) does not. No kitchen experiment.
- Near-miss: “electrons flow through dry salt crystals.” Mark the first wrong line.
Independent practice
- Link high MP of NaCl to a 3-D lattice vs molecular IMFs in sucrose.
- Two sentences: mobility of ions vs electrons in these examples.
- Setting: Session 04 classroom-supervised or dataset - name which you would use if no probe is available.
Diagram / whiteboard

Checks for understanding
Use the formative evidence below as the exit check for this outcome. Correct the misconception named in this lesson before praising.
Misconception to repair
Claiming ionic solids conduct because “electrons flow through salt crystals.”
Safety and lab register
Setting: classroom-supervised only for Session 04 conductivity (NaCl / sucrose / ~5% vinegar, 9 V LED or school probe). All other Unit A work is paper, models, data cards, or approved simulation. Forbidden: bleach+acid, bleach+ammonia, flames, tasting, home copy of Session 04, concentrated acids/bases, generating Cl2. AI Tutor must not invent labs outside CHEM20_LOW_RESOURCE_LAB_REGISTER.csv.
Alberta Poison Control if a real exposure is occurring: 1-844-764-7669. The AI Tutor is not a poison centre.
Formative evidence
Table: NaCl(s), NaCl(aq), sucrose(aq) - MP/conductivity claims from data, not invention.
This is not a diploma. Mastery needs instruction + activity + check.
AI Tutor / human tutor
Ground on 20-A1.6k. No false praise. No invented procedures. No silent skip to a different unit. Human tutor if the student describes mixing bleach, tasting, or flames.
