Chemistry 20 - Valence, EN, ionic bond
LESSON = canonical instructional unit covering official Chemistry 20 outcomes. SESSION = bootcamp delivery event. A bootcamp session may overlay several Unit A lessons.
Enhanced overlay: Weeks 1-2 bootcamp session-01.html may be taught with this lesson. The bootcamp is not the whole course.

Official outcome text
define valence electron, electronegativity, ionic bond and intramolecular force
Learning intention
Meet 20-A1.3k with instruction, practice, and a check. The 10-session bootcamp does not replace this lesson.
Success criteria
- Restate the outcome in classroom language without swapping in a different unit’s template.
- Complete the worked-style task for this outcome.
- Name the lab setting (classroom-supervised / teacher demo / dataset or simulation / forbidden).
Teaching
Valence electrons are the outer-shell electrons that participate in bonding. Electronegativity is the attraction of an atom in a bond for shared electrons. An ionic bond is the electrostatic attraction between cations and anions after electron transfer. Intramolecular force holds atoms or ions together inside a formula unit or molecule (ionic attraction or covalent sharing) - it is not the force between separate molecules.
Worked example
Na (electronegativity ~0.9) and Cl (~3.0): large ΔEN, electron transfer, Na+ and Cl−, ionic intramolecular attraction in the lattice. Contrast later: H-Cl is covalent intramolecular bonding.
Guided practice
- Define valence electron, electronegativity, ionic bond, and intramolecular force using K and Br (not Na/Cl).
- Near-miss: “London forces hold NaCl together inside the formula unit.” Mark the first wrong line.
Independent practice
- Classify the attraction inside a NaCl lattice vs between H2O molecules.
- Two sentences: why a large ΔEN supports electron transfer rather than equal sharing.
- State which of ionic bond / hydrogen bond is intramolecular in NaCl(s).

Checks for understanding
Use the formative evidence below as the exit check for this outcome. Correct the misconception named in this lesson before praising.
Misconception to repair
Calling London forces “intramolecular,” or defining ionic bond as “sharing electrons.”
Safety and lab register
Setting: classroom-supervised only for Session 04 conductivity (NaCl / sucrose / ~5% vinegar, 9 V LED or school probe). All other Unit A work is paper, models, data cards, or approved simulation. Forbidden: bleach+acid, bleach+ammonia, flames, tasting, home copy of Session 04, concentrated acids/bases, generating Cl2. AI Tutor must not invent labs outside CHEM20_LOW_RESOURCE_LAB_REGISTER.csv.
Alberta Poison Control if a real exposure is occurring: 1-844-764-7669. The AI Tutor is not a poison centre.
Formative evidence
Four one-line definitions plus one NaCl vs HCl contrast.
This is not a diploma. Mastery needs instruction + activity + check.
AI Tutor / human tutor
Ground on 20-A1.3k. No false praise. No invented procedures. No silent skip to a different unit. Human tutor if the student describes mixing bleach, tasting, or flames.
