Chemistry 20 - Ionic naming

LESSON = canonical instructional unit covering official Chemistry 20 outcomes. SESSION = bootcamp delivery event. A bootcamp session may overlay several Unit A lessons.

Enhanced overlay: Weeks 1-2 bootcamp session-01.html may be taught with this lesson. The bootcamp is not the whole course.

Official outcome text

recall principles for assigning names to ionic compounds

Learning intention

Meet 20-A1.1k with instruction, practice, and a check. The 10-session bootcamp does not replace this lesson.

Success criteria

  1. Restate the outcome in classroom language without swapping in a different unit’s template.
  2. Complete the worked-style task for this outcome.
  3. Name the lab setting (classroom-supervised / teacher demo / dataset or simulation / forbidden).

Teaching

Ionic names put the cation first and the anion second. Binary anions end in -ide (Cl− chloride, O2− oxide). Variable-charge metals use the Stock number: FeCl2 is iron(II) chloride, FeCl3 is iron(III) chloride. Polyatomic ions keep their names: NO3− nitrate, SO42− sulfate, CO32− carbonate, OH− hydroxide, NH4+ ammonium. Do not use Greek prefixes (di-, tri-) on ionic formulas - those belong to molecular names.

Worked example

Name Na2SO4: sodium (Group 1, charge not written) + sulfate → sodium sulfate. Name CuCl2: copper can be +1 or +2; two Cl− mean Cu2+ → copper(II) chloride. Formula for ammonium phosphate: NH4+ and PO43− → (NH4)3PO4.

Guided practice

  1. Name Fe2(SO4)3 and write the formula for potassium nitride. Do not reuse Na2SO4, CuCl2, or (NH4)3PO4 from the worked example.
  2. Near-miss: a student writes “sodium dichloride” for NaCl, then starts a mass-to-mole worksheet to “check.” Mark the first wrong line.

Independent practice

  1. Name Cu2O and write the formula for iron(III) carbonate.
  2. Two sentences: why Stock numbers appear on Cu and Fe but not on Na.
  3. Charge-balance check for Fe2(SO4)3.

Checks for understanding

Use the formative evidence below as the exit check for this outcome. Correct the misconception named in this lesson before praising.

Misconception to repair

Using prefixes on ionic names (sodium dichloride) or omitting the Stock number on FeCl2.

Safety and lab register

Setting: classroom-supervised only for Session 04 conductivity (NaCl / sucrose / ~5% vinegar, 9 V LED or school probe). All other Unit A work is paper, models, data cards, or approved simulation. Forbidden: bleach+acid, bleach+ammonia, flames, tasting, home copy of Session 04, concentrated acids/bases, generating Cl2. AI Tutor must not invent labs outside CHEM20_LOW_RESOURCE_LAB_REGISTER.csv.

Alberta Poison Control if a real exposure is occurring: 1-844-764-7669. The AI Tutor is not a poison centre.

Formative evidence

Name Fe2O3 and write the formula for calcium nitrate; one sentence on why Greek prefixes are not used for ionic names.

This is not a diploma. Mastery needs instruction + activity + check.

AI Tutor / human tutor

Ground on 20-A1.1k. No false praise. No invented procedures. No silent skip to a different unit. Human tutor if the student describes mixing bleach, tasting, or flames.
