Career and Life Management
Alberta CALM follows Personal, Resource, and Career and Life Choices. The 10-session bootcamp is a separate accelerated pathway.
Session 10 — Credit vs cash, portfolio checkpoint, Milestone 1
Course: CALM (PED0770). Topic: CALM-RC-06 intro + synthesis of PC-01–06 and RC-01–05. ~75 min.
Privacy: no real credit files, scores, or statements. Fictional $240 kit.
HCS3000 remains LINK_ONLY if anyone asks about “working the kiosk.”
Official outcomes / topics
- CALM-R8 (intro): advantages and disadvantages of credit; overextension; credit ratings as a concept (not a pull of student files).
- CALM-R2 / R4: consequences; financial goals.
- CALM-C5 (checkpoint): portfolio Sections A–C have weeks 1–2 artifacts.
- CALM-C11 (partial): one next action toward a longer plan — full EP03 later.
- Synthesis: P1, P5, P8, P14, R1, R7 as used in the brief.
Known limitation: P10–P12, full R9–R10, CL-01–07 (except portfolio start and role), HCS body — not in these 10 sessions.
Learning targets
- Compare cash vs fictional store card for a $240 equipment/kit purchase using the teaching 19.99%/year sketch.
- Submit Milestone 1 life–career start brief (Track E or P) to Section C.
- Complete a weeks 1–2 portfolio checklist (self + teacher glance).
- Restate AI/crisis boundaries in one line.
Prerequisites
Sessions 01–09 artifacts in the folder (gaps allowed with a plan). Calculators.
Diagnostic / retrieval
Cash $240 from leftover 478 → leftover 238.
Card: leftover stays 478 this month; $240 owed.
Which is “more leftover today”? Card. Which is cheaper if paid immediately next day with no interest? Same $240 plus any fee — teaching fee $0 if paid in 21 days fictional grace; if not, ~$4/month from EP02.
Instruction
Advantages of credit (scenario): timing (buy table kit now, kiosk can operate); fraud dispute as a concept; building a rating later in life — Grade 11s may not have files; we do not check.
Disadvantages: interest if unpaid; fees; overextension; rating harm if missed — concept. Minimum payment 3% of 240 = 7.20 — paying only minimum is a trap we show: 7.20 vs 240.
Cash: no interest; opportunity cost on leftover; theft of jar cash.
Portfolio checkpoint (CALM-PF): folder A–C; SMART tracker; wheel; Cedar Bend map; nutrition card; matrix; budget; interest calc; this credit comparison. Missing items → dated plan, not public shaming.
Milestone 1: two pages per CALM_LIFE_CAREER_PLAN_PROJECT.md. Role or Track P. Wellbeing constraint. AI disclosure.
Timed visuals
| id | trigger | duration | alt | teacher cue | tutor cue |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CALM-VIS-10-240 | After retrieval | 55 s | Two wallets | 478−240=238 | No live APR |
| CALM-VIS-10-MIN | Minute 18 | 40 s | 3% of 240=7.20 | “Minimum ≠ payoff” | Don’t pull Equifax |
| CALM-VIS-10-PF | Minute 40 | 50 s | Checklist PF-01–08,10,11 | Silent folder check | Don’t read private envelopes |
Modelling / worked examples
Interest sketch (same as EP02): 19.99%/12 ≈ 1.666%/month; 240 × 0.01666 ≈ $4.00 if unpaid one month.
Pay in full in 21 days (fictional grace): interest $0, still a habit and rating discussion.
Cash path: leftover 238; cannot also buy headphones 90 this month (238−90=148 if they try — still possible; show 238).
Minimum-only trap: if they pay $7.20 and still owe ~237 plus new interest — do not build a 30-year amortization; one month is enough to see the trap.
Kiosk: buying a $240 canopy on the card while cash is 663 after sales looks tempting; if sales were zero, cash 483, card still 240 due — overextension (R8).
Guided practice + answers
Complete a T-chart cash vs card for the $240 kit. Must include one non-interest disadvantage (impulse, fees, rating concept).
Portfolio pair-check: partner confirms public artifacts exist; partner does not open private envelope.
Independent practice
- FOUNDATION: T-chart two advantages / two disadvantages.
- CORE: Arithmetic 478−240 and 3% of 240.
- PROFICIENT: Milestone 1 brief first complete draft.
- ADVANCED: Shock: unpaid 3 months at ~$4/month teaching interest (≈12) plus still $240 principal — still a sketch, not a card contract.
Project connection
Milestone 1 due (or next class if IEP extra time). This is the weeks 1–2 product, not the 3–5 year capstone.
Checks for understanding
“Will I collect your credit score?” No. “Is 19.99% a real offer?” Teaching number dated 2026-08-18.
Misconceptions
| Wrong | Repair |
|---|---|
| “Credit is free if I pay the minimum.” | Minimum keeps the debt alive. |
| “No credit file means I’m a failure at 16.” | Many teens have none; we don’t pull files. |
| “Milestone 1 is the whole career portfolio.” | C5 start only. |
| “Tutor can approve my real card application.” | No. |
AI Tutor prompts and safeguarding boundaries
Allowed: “Check 3% of 240.” “Outline Milestone 1 headings.”
Forbidden: applying for credit; scraping scores; opening trauma; HCS content. Crisis → 911 / Kids Help Phone / 211 / teacher. No false praise.
Human-tutor handoff
Incomplete folder: schedule a quiet completion, not a show. Distress about real family debt: counsellor; stay fictional in class.
Exit ticket
- 3% of 240 = 7.20.
- 478 − 240 = 238.
- Name one artifact still missing or write “complete.”
- “AI Tutor is not a counsellor” — copy the sentence.
Homework
Polish Milestone 1. Optional: one dated reflection (Section E, week 2). No real credit documents.
Teacher guidance
Glance folders; do not photograph private goals. Record LINK_ONLY for HCS if asked. Do not deploy, do not touch Biology 30, Math 10C, Science 10, wrangler.
Weeks 3+ preview (not taught): taxes (RC-04), investing (RC-07), insurance (RC-08), graduation (CL-01), HCS pointer (CL-02), career research, P10–P12 with private alternatives, EP03 full map.
Materials
T-chart; checklist from student_portfolio_checklist.csv rows PF-01–08, 10, 11; Milestone 1 rubric; fictional card.
Preparation
Print dated 19.99% teaching stamp. Stack private envelopes unopened.
Timing
| Min | Move |
|---|---|
| 0–8 | Cash vs card retrieval |
| 8–22 | R8 intro; $4 and $7.20 |
| 22–38 | T-chart + overextension kiosk case |
| 38–58 | Portfolio checkpoint + Milestone writing |
| 58–68 | Advanced / catch-up |
| 68–75 | Exit + known limitations reminder |
