Career and Life Management
Alberta CALM follows Personal, Resource, and Career and Life Choices. The 10-session bootcamp is a separate accelerated pathway.
Session 07 — Resource planning, needs vs wants, decision matrix
Course: CALM (PED0770). Topics: CALM-RC-01, CALM-RC-02. ~75 min.
Packages: CALM-RC-01, CALM-RC-02.
Official outcomes / topics
- CALM-R1: identify personal resources (time, energy, knowledge, skills, technology access, finances) and how they meet lifestyle demands.
- CALM-R2: compare needs, wants, and consequences for self, others, society; financial plans as tools; note GTI warning on gambling/get-rich schemes as a one-line reject, not a casino field trip.
- CALM-R3 (preview): lifestyle aspirations vs resources.
- Canon: resource planning; needs vs wants; decision matrices; opportunity cost.
Learning targets
- Inventory Jordan’s resources using given hours and $774 net, not family bank data.
- Classify items as need / want / depends in this scenario.
- Complete a weighted decision matrix for “packed lunch vs café” or “kiosk table rental vs no table.”
Prerequisites
Session 02 hour map; session 06 $18/week café extra. Calculators.
Diagnostic / retrieval
Sort: bus pass, concert, water, brand hoodie, phone plan. Students will disagree on phone — that is depends (job contact vs extra data). Disagreement is the point.
Instruction
Resources (R1) are not only money: Jordan has 12 job hours, Grade 12 knowledge, a phone, aunt housing (determinant), bus access. Missing: a car.
Need: serious harm if missing in the scenario (bus to keep the given job; food; shelter is given via aunt — we do not interrogate real housing).
Want: concert.
Depends: phone — need for the employer to text shifts; extra gaming data is a want.
Opportunity cost: café lunches cost $77/month extra (session 06). That $77 cannot also be a kiosk inventory boost.
Gambling line (R2 GTI): lotteries/high-risk “get rich” are not a resource plan. One sentence; no play.
Matrix: rows = options; columns = criteria (cost, wellbeing, job risk, project); scores 1–3; weights optional at proficient.
Timed visuals
| id | trigger | duration | alt | teacher cue | tutor cue |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CALM-VIS-07-INV | After retrieval | 70 s | Six resource tiles | “Time is a resource” | Don’t ask real income |
| CALM-VIS-07-NWD | Minute 18 | 40 s | Need/want/depends columns | Phone in depends | Stay in scenario |
| CALM-VIS-07-MX | Minute 40 | 80 s | 2×4 matrix packed vs café | Show 3+2+3 vs 1+3+1 | Add numbers in cells |
Modelling / worked examples
Jordan inventory:
| Resource | Given evidence | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Time | 12 h job + school | Saturday extra optional |
| Money | $774 net/month | Not a real paystub |
| Skills | Cashier | Not a chemist |
| Tech | Phone | Data cap unknown — don’t invent |
| Social | Coworkers 15 min | Thin |
| Knowledge | Grade 12 | CALM started |
Matrix packed vs café (weights: cost 2, wellbeing 2, social 1):
Packed: cost 3×2=6; wellbeing 3×2=6 (CFG lunch exists); social 1×1=1; total 13.
Café: cost 1×2=2; wellbeing 2×2=4; social 3×1=3; total 9.
Decision: packed wins on this weighting. A student may reweight social to 3 — then café can win; they must show the arithmetic and name the leftover drop.
Kiosk: table $40/month vs selling from a backpack (school may forbid). Criteria: safety, visibility, cost. Backpack scores low on safety — we do not send students to street-vend without approval. Classroom table only.
Guided practice + answers
Pairs classify 8 given items for Jordan. Then fill the packed/café matrix with the teacher weights first.
Answers: bus need; concert want; lunch need (form can differ); extra energy drinks want; kiosk unscented soap inventory need if Track E chosen.
Independent practice
- FOUNDATION: 6-item sort need/want/depends.
- CORE: Resource inventory table with four rows from given data.
- PROFICIENT: Weighted matrix; totals correct.
- ADVANCED: Change one weight, recompute, explain who is affected (self, coworkers, kiosk customers — R2 “others”).
Project connection
Milestone 1 requires this matrix or an equivalent trade-off paragraph. Track P uses Jordan’s lunch matrix only.
Checks for understanding
“If café wins after reweighting, did packed become a want?” No — lunch is still a need; café is the want form.
Misconceptions
| Wrong | Repair |
|---|---|
| “Needs are whatever feels urgent.” | Harm-if-missing in the scenario. |
| “Matrices prove the one true answer.” | Weights are values; show them. |
| “I must use my family’s grocery bill.” | Given numbers. |
| “Crypto is the resource plan.” | R2 get-rich reject. |
AI Tutor prompts and safeguarding boundaries
Allowed: “Add these weighted scores.” “Classify items for Jordan.”
Forbidden: live stock tips; “how much does your family make?”; gambling tips. Crisis → humans.
Human-tutor handoff
Poverty shame: stay on $774 given. Counsellor if distress.
Exit ticket
One need, one want, one opportunity cost in dollars.
Sample: bus need; concert want; café extra ≈ $77/month not available for soap inventory.
Homework
Do not bring real bills. Optional: blank matrix for River’s “extra café shift vs sleep” using session 04 hours.
Teacher guidance
Mark arithmetic and labelled trade-offs. Do not mark “correct lifestyle.” No product placement for banks.
Materials
Inventory sheet; matrix grid; given $774/$40/$77.
Preparation
Write the weight set on the board before independent work so CORE students match.
Timing
| Min | Move |
|---|---|
| 0–8 | Sort retrieval |
| 8–22 | R1 inventory + R2 definitions |
| 22–40 | Model matrix with products 13 vs 9 |
| 40–62 | Guided + independent |
| 62–70 | Project: which matrix goes in Section C |
| 70–75 | Exit |
Online alternative
