Career and Life Management

Alberta CALM follows Personal, Resource, and Career and Life Choices. The 10-session bootcamp is a separate accelerated pathway.

Session 05 — Community supports map (fictional Cedar Bend)

Course: CALM (PED0770). Topic: CALM-PC-05. ~75 min.

Package: semester_ready\packages\CALM-PC-05\.

Fictional town data only. Do not require real family addresses, real doctors’ names, or a household genogram.

Official outcomes / topics

  • CALM-P14: evaluate resources and support systems for each dimension of health for self and others; consumer/citizenship actions — public services.
  • CALM-P9 (light): communication for accessing help — how to ask, using a script, not a conflict with family.
  • Canon: identify services; help-seeking; community resource map. Localization to Grande Prairie/Fairview is delivery-layer later; this rapid pack uses Cedar Bend so no student is forced to out themselves as living in a small town.

Learning targets

  1. Map at least five Cedar Bend public supports to wellness dimensions.
  2. Write one access step (hours, phone, or walk-in rule) from the handout — not from memory of a relative.
  3. Optional private: add one real public number (211 or local library) in the teacher-private layer.

Prerequisites

Sessions 03–04 ladder.

Diagnostic / retrieval

“Name a support that is not a family member.” If students only say “mom,” teacher: family can be a support privately; today’s map is public.

Instruction

Cedar Bend, Alberta (invented, pop. ~8,400). Handout (teaching; not a real municipal directory):

Credit union (later RC)ResourceMention only: exists on Main St. — no account opening
RCMP non-emergencySafetyListed on handout; 911 for emergency

Students must not be sent to photograph a real food bank as homework.

How to ask (P9): script: “I need information about X. What are your hours?” Practice on the library, not “call your dad.”

Modelling / worked examples

Jordan needs a quiet study place after the 21:00 grocery close. Library closes 20:00 — mismatch. Repair: Youth Hub until 18:30 doesn’t help either. Determinant: evening worker. Options: Sunday library hours if the handout lists 12:00–16:00 Sunday (add that line: Sunday 12:00–16:00). Then Jordan can study Sunday, not job nights.

Food bank pin maps to physical and to a determinant (income). Students write “hours from handout” not “my family uses this.”

Guided practice + answers

Pairs place five pins on a blank map using only the table. Each pin: service, dimension, one access fact.

Answer check: five public services; no home addresses; 211 counted as province-wide not a Cedar Bend building.

Independent practice

  • FOUNDATION: Three pins with names only.
  • CORE: Five pins + dimension + hours/phone from handout.
  • PROFICIENT: One gap analysis (evening student vs library hours) + a workaround.
  • ADVANCED: Write a 6-line “how to use 211” without disclosing a personal crisis (use Jordan: “looking for youth rec options”).

Project connection

Kiosk communications role: a poster may list 211 and “ask staff for the public hours sheet.” It may not list a student’s home.

Checks for understanding

“Can a pin be your cousin?” Not on the shared map. “Is 211 a Cedar Bend office?” It’s a navigation line; still allowed as a pin.

Misconceptions

WrongRepair
“Supports = family only.”P14 includes community systems.
“We have to volunteer at the real food bank this week.”Not required; fictional map.
“Putting a counsellor’s personal cell in the gallery is fine.”Public lines only.
“AI can look up my town and my house.”Stay on Cedar Bend handout.

AI Tutor prompts and safeguarding boundaries

Allowed: “Match Cedar Bend services to dimensions using this table.”

Forbidden: “Find my address”; “call this number for me”; crisis therapy. Crisis → human rungs from session 04.

Human-tutor handoff

Student who actually uses a food bank: private layer, no gallery. Shame is a teacher problem to prevent, not a discussion prompt.

Exit ticket

Two supports + the dimension each serves + one access fact.

Sample: Library — intellectual — closes 20:00; 211 — navigation — dial 211.

Homework

Do not interview family about income or who they “really” call. Optional private: write one real public number (library/211) for your actual community in the envelope.

Teacher guidance

If you later localize to Grande Prairie/Fairview, replace the handout at the delivery layer; do not force students to confirm where they live. Re-verify 211 and help lines.

Materials

Cedar Bend map; table; script card; stickers/pins.

Preparation

Print Sunday library hours on the table so the evening-worker gap is solvable. Remove any real student-address activity from old outreach packs.
