Career and Life Management
Alberta CALM follows Personal, Resource, and Career and Life Choices. The 10-session bootcamp is a separate accelerated pathway.
Session 04 — Stress, sleep, resiliency, and help-seeking
Course: CALM (PED0770). Topics: CALM-PC-04, CALM-PC-05 intro. ~75 min.
Packages: CALM-PC-04, start CALM-PC-05.
Safeguarding: AI Tutor is not a counsellor. Emergencies → human support.
P7 examples about depression/suicide are not a student writing prompt. Teacher may mention that help exists; no “write your darkest day.”
Official outcomes / topics
- CALM-P8: anticipating/managing change; benefits and limits of stress; harmful responses — via scenario.
- CALM-P6: physical well-being practices — sleep as schedule, not a sleep-clinic.
- CALM-P14 (intro): support systems for dimensions of health — public contacts.
- CALM-P7 (boundary): emotional well-being strategies in general language; no assigned suicide narrative.
- Canon: stressors; coping; resilience; sleep hygiene; support seeking.
Learning targets
- Separate stressor (event/condition) from stress response (what a character does).
- Propose two non-harmful coping moves for Jordan that cost time or money honestly.
- Name three public/help pathways (school adult, 211, Kids Help Phone) and when the AI Tutor must stop.
Prerequisites
Session 03 wheel. Privacy poster up.
Diagnostic / retrieval
“True/false: The CALM AI tutor can be your counsellor.” False — teacher says it out loud even if everyone got it.
Second: estimate Jordan’s job-night sleep from session 01 card (23:40–06:10 = 6 h 30 min).
Instruction
Stressor examples (scenario): extra Saturday shift; two skipped lunches; bus missed.
Response examples: snap at a coworker; scroll until 23:40; ask a supervisor for a shift swap.
Resiliency (teaching definition): ability to adjust a plan after a setback, not “never feel stress.” P8 includes that stress can have limits and also that harmful responses exist (we name them as not assigned practice: substance use details later; self-harm never as an activity).
Sleep: consistent lights-out, caffeine late, screens — as Jordan’s habits. Students may use a private tally; they will not read it aloud.
Help-seeking ladder: (1) trusted adult at school (2) counsellor (3) 211 Alberta (4) Kids Help Phone 1-800-668-6868 / text CONNECT 686868 (5) 911 if someone is in immediate danger. AHS Mental Health Help Line 1-877-303-2642 — re-verify before class. These are public. Students do not list their mother’s cell.
PC-05 intro: a “support” is a service or person-in-role, not a forced family genogram.

Modelling / worked examples
Jordan is asked to work Saturday 09:00–17:00 (7 h × $15 = $105). Stressor: money vs sleep.
Plan A: take the shift, lights-out 22:00 Friday (still 6.5 h if wake 06:10 Saturday — wait: Saturday wake for 09:00 job could be 07:30 → Friday 22:00–07:30 = 9.5 h). Show that Saturday sleep can improve while Friday social plans change.
Plan B: decline Saturday, lose $105, use 3 h for homework + 1 h walk.
Resiliency move: ask for a shorter Saturday (09:00–13:00) → $60 vs $105, 4 h not 7 h.
Harmful response named as not-to-practice: “energy drinks until 01:00 then drive.” We do not role-play intoxication.
Guided practice + answers
Pairs write a two-column table: stressor | response | healthier swap | cost.
Must include one help-seeking row using a public rung (e.g. if Jordan’s overwhelm lasts weeks, counsellor — still fictional).
Look-fors: arithmetic on $105; no student personal crisis in the shared table.
Independent practice
- FOUNDATION: One stressor/response pair from the Saturday shift.
- CORE: Two plans with dollar or hour costs.
- PROFICIENT: Add a help-seeking sentence that uses 211 or a school adult, not a parent’s private number.
- ADVANCED: Write the 4-line script the AI Tutor should use if a student types “I want to disappear” (redirect to humans; no therapy).
Project connection
Track E: kiosk weekend pop-up competes with Jordan’s Saturday grocery shift. Milestone 1 must show the wellbeing cost, not pretend unlimited labour.
Checks for understanding
“If a classmate is in danger, do you paste it into the AI?” No — tell a staff member / 911.
“Is resiliency never crying?” No.
Misconceptions
| Wrong | Repair |
|---|---|
| “Good students aren’t stressed.” | P8: stress happens; management is the skill. |
| “Help-seeking is weak.” | P14: supports are part of the course. |
| “Tutor is confidential counselling.” | Not a counsellor; school protocol applies. |
| “Sleep hygiene = same as medical insomnia care.” | We plan schedules; we don’t diagnose. |
AI Tutor prompts and safeguarding boundaries
Allowed: “Compare Plan A/B for Jordan’s Saturday using $15/h.” “List public help rungs.”
Must not: invent labs or coping “protocols” that are medical treatment; ask follow-up trauma questions; say “I’m proud you told me that” as if therapy started.
Must: on crisis language — not a crisis service; 911 if danger; Kids Help Phone; 211; tell a teacher now.
Human-tutor handoff
Any self-harm or abuse disclosure: stop lesson for that student, counsellor/admin. Do not put it in the gallery. Rest of class continues on Jordan.
Exit ticket
- One cost of Jordan taking Saturday ($105 or sleep/social).
- Name two human/public supports.
- Complete: “The AI Tutor is not a _____.”
Answers: 2. e.g. teacher, counsellor, 211, Kids Help Phone. 3. counsellor (or crisis service).
Homework
Optional private sleep tally 3 nights — do not bring it to share. No “ask your parents how they cope.”
Teacher guidance
Re-verify phone numbers the morning of. Do not show graphic suicide videos. P2 substance examples stay off unless a student asks a factual public-health question — then short and refer.
Materials
Help-rung poster; Jordan calendar; $15/h reminder; privacy file one-pager.
Preparation
Counsellor name/extension on the board. Test that the Kids Help Phone number on the poster matches current public listing.
Timing
| Min | Move |
|---|---|
| 0–8 | T/F tutor + sleep count |
| 8–22 | Stressor vs response; ladder |
| 22–38 | Saturday shift model with $105 |
| 38–55 | Guided tables |
| 55–68 | Independent including tutor script (advanced) |
| 68–75 | Exit |
Online alternative
Same numbers. Chat monitor on for crisis language. Private message teacher, not the public channel.
Low-technology alternative
