Career and Life Management

Alberta CALM follows Personal, Resource, and Career and Life Choices. The 10-session bootcamp is a separate accelerated pathway.

Session 03 — Dimensions of health (scenarios only)

Course: CALM (PED0770). Topic: CALM-PC-03. ~75 min.

Package: semester_ready\packages\CALM-PC-03\.

No required self-disclosure. P10–P12 relationships/sexuality are not this lesson (see known limitations in the privacy file).

Official outcomes / topics

  • CALM-P1: analyze dimensions of health, interrelatedness, determinants of health, dynamic balance.
  • CALM-P6 (start): practices for physical well-being — as options on a scenario, not a body audit.
  • CALM-P13 (light): media/science claims about wellness — one ad critique, no supplement sales.
  • Canon: physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual/meaning dimensions.

Learning targets

  1. Name five dimensions and give one observable clue from a fictional schedule.
  2. Show one interrelated pair (e.g. sleep ↔ mood in the scenario).
  3. Distinguish a determinant (bus access, job hours, housing with aunt) from a personal moral failing.

Prerequisites

Sessions 01–02. Persona cards.

Diagnostic / retrieval

List as many “kinds of health” as you can in 60 seconds. Typical student list: physical only. Teacher: CALM uses multiple dimensions.

Instruction

Dimensions (teaching set): physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual/meaning (purpose). Schools may use “spiritual” as meaning/purpose; students are not required to name a faith.

Determinants of health (GTI): conditions that create/maintain health — income, social support, education, working conditions, physical environment, etc. Jordan’s aunt housing and bus are determinants, not character grades.

Dynamic balance: a dimension can be “enough this week, thin next week.” The wheel is a snapshot, not a diagnosis.

Out of bounds today: relationship violence, sexual behaviour, suicide. If a student raises them, acknowledge, point to counsellor/Kids Help Phone, return to the scenario.

Modelling / worked examples

Jordan Mon–Fri: 6.5 h sleep job nights; skipped lunch ×2; job social time with coworkers 21:00–21:15; no homework block; Sunday 4 h homework (intellectual); no listed purpose activity.

DimensionEvidence from scheduleThin/OK (scenario)
Physical6.5 h sleep; skipped lunchThin
EmotionalNot stated — do not invent depressionUnknown; leave blank or “not evidenced”
Social15 min with coworkers; possible isolation weekendsMixed
IntellectualSunday 4 hPartial
MeaningNot evidencedBlank — students may propose a fictional 45 min volunteer

Interrelation: skipped lunch (physical) → afternoon classes harder (intellectual). Do not say “therefore Jordan has ADHD.”

Guided practice + answers

Pairs complete the table for Sam Ortega: Grade 11, no job, 22:00–07:00 sleep (9 h), 2 h/night social media, 1 h walk, eats cafeteria lunch, studies 45 min, volunteers Saturday 2 h at fictional Cedar Bend library.

Sample: Physical OK (sleep, walk, lunch); social mixed (online vs in-person); meaning: library volunteer; intellectual: 45 min may be thin vs Sunday-Jordan.

Independent practice

  • FOUNDATION: Label five spokes; two with Sam evidence.
  • CORE: Full table + one interrelated pair.
  • PROFICIENT: Add one determinant (no job → more time, less money — trade-off).
  • ADVANCED: Critique the detox-tea ad in 4 sentences using P13 (claim, missing evidence, possible harm, better question).

Project connection

Kiosk shifts cannot ignore physical dimension: a 21:00 close plus 08:30 school is a balance issue for River Chen. Record a constraint for Milestone 1.

Checks for understanding

“Is ‘spiritual’ a required religion share?” No. “Is a blank emotional spoke a fail?” No — it means no evidence, not “student refused to traumatize themselves.”

Misconceptions

WrongRepair
“Health = BMI.”Multi-dimension; no weigh-ins.
“Poor people are unhealthy because they don’t try.”Determinants (P1).
“We should diagnose Jordan.”We analyze a schedule.
“Spiritual well-being = P11 intimacy lesson.”Different outcome; intimacy is later with private alternatives.

AI Tutor prompts and safeguarding boundaries

Allowed: “Fill a dimension table from this schedule.” “Explain determinant vs choice in Jordan’s bus commute.”

Forbidden: “Do I have anxiety?”; treatment; rating the student’s body; sexuality content. Crisis → human supports; no therapy role-play; no praise for unsafe disclosure.

Human-tutor handoff

If a student is triggered by “spiritual”: use “purpose/meaning” only. Counsellor if needed.

Exit ticket

One interrelated pair from Sam or Jordan + one determinant.

Sample: Sam’s volunteer (meaning) supports social; determinant: no job increases time.

Homework

Do not interview family about health. Optional: one media wellness claim screenshot with a date and one question (private).

Teacher guidance

Grade the table, not “vulnerability.” No icebreaker “share a trauma.” Keep P12 off the board.

Materials

Wheel; persona schedules; fake ad; privacy reminder.

Preparation

Re-read privacy file. Remove any old “relationship inventory” worksheets from the PC-03 pile if they demand personal dating history.

Online alternative

Same table in a doc. No cameras on faces during “wellness.” Breakouts optional.

Low-technology alternative

Paper wheel. Skip the fake-ad video; use a printed tea label.
