Career and Life Management

Alberta CALM follows Personal, Resource, and Career and Life Choices. The 10-session bootcamp is a separate accelerated pathway.

Session 01 — Orientation, evidence portfolio, fictional baseline goals

Course: CALM (PED0770). Topic: CALM-PC-01. Rapid pack weeks 1–2, ~75 min.

Canon packages: satellites\training\active\calm\semester_ready\packages\CALM-PC-01\.

Do not copy Religious Studies / Catholic 25 template language from the old 66-row contamination flags.

Official outcomes / topics

  • CALM-C5 (start): begin a quality career/life portfolio — folder and evidence rules, not a finished capstone.
  • CALM-P5 (intro): lifelong learning includes managing time and strategies for being assessed — today: how this course is evidenced.
  • CALM-P3 / P4 (light): creative thinking and problem-solving as decision tools, not personality tests.
  • Topic canon: course expectations; evidence portfolio; goal-setting baseline (fictional allowed).

Not today: P10–P12 sexuality/relationships; HCS3000 content (CALM-CL-02 stays LINK_ONLY).

Learning targets

  1. State what CALM is (personal, resource, and career/life decisions; 3 credits; PED0770).
  2. Set up portfolio Sections A–E and know what is shared vs teacher-private.
  3. Write three fictional or school-safe baseline goals that can be made SMART tomorrow.
  4. Name the opt-out rule: no required trauma, medical, sexuality, or family-finance disclosure.

Prerequisites

None. Grade 10–12 mixed is normal. Literacy: write 4–6 sentences.

Diagnostic / retrieval

3 minutes, paper:

  1. What does “CALM” stand for?
  2. Name one decision a Grade 11 student makes that is not a test question (job hours, course load, budget).
  3. True/false: “I must tell the class private family information to pass.”

Quick show of hands for Q3 — teacher states false immediately if anyone says true.

Instruction

CALM is Alberta’s senior-high course for informed decisions across three general outcomes: Personal Choices, Resource Choices, Career and Life Choices (2002 PoS / GTI). It is not psychology class, not a bank, not a clinic.

Evidence, not confession. A portfolio artifact can be 100% about persona Jordan Hale (17, 12 h/week grocery, lives with aunt — fictional). Students who want school-safe personal goals (e.g. “submit homework by 20:00 on school nights”) use the private layer.

Digital citizenship (nearest map, hold review): do not photograph classmates’ journals; do not paste AI text as your own; disclose AI.

HCS3000: if a student asks about workplace safety tickets, say: recorded later as a link to the external module. We will not open the HCS zip or certificates in this room.

Modelling / worked examples

Teacher writes three baseline (not yet SMART) goals for Jordan:

  1. Keep grocery shifts and still sleep more than 6.5 h on job nights.
  2. Finish CALM portfolio Section A this week.
  3. Decide Track E (kiosk) vs Track P (private budget) by session 08.

Then show a non-example copied from a contaminated template: “Search for meaning in Catholic 25 Unit 1.” Cross it out. CALM goal: decisions and evidence.

Show a bad goal: “Be happy.” Repair seed for session 02: happiness is not measurable here; sleep hours and portfolio artifacts are.

Guided practice + answers

Students label a paper folder (or LMS) A–E. They copy the sentence: “I can use fictional personas; I will not be graded on family secrets.”

Answers / look-fors: Section A exists; acknowledgement signed with date; three baseline goals written; if personal, they are school-safe (homework, attendance, job hours) not medical.

Pair-share only fictional goals unless both students opt in to school-safe personal — teacher does not force pairs to swap private sheets.

Independent practice

  • FOUNDATION: Copy Jordan’s three goals in your own handwriting and add a fourth: “Learn what a need vs a want is.”
  • CORE: Write three original fictional goals for Sam Ortega (16, no job, health-science interest).
  • PROFICIENT: Write three school-safe personal goals in the private envelope; submit only a tick-box “private goals completed.”
  • ADVANCED: Draft a one-paragraph team norm for the kiosk project (honest claims, no chemical mixing, no sharing medical stories).

Project connection

Introduce Track E vs Track P (see CALM_LIFE_CAREER_PLAN_PROJECT.md). Today: choice not due. Students star which track they might try.

Checks for understanding

Exit-style mid: “Point to the drawer where a budget will go.” (C) “Where does a resume go?” (D, later) “Where does a crisis disclosure go?” (Not in the portfolio — counsellor.)

Misconceptions

WrongRepair
“CALM is an easy spare.”3-credit diploma requirement course; evidence is assessed.
“I have to share my home life to be authentic.”Authenticity = good decisions on given or private-safe data.
“The AI tutor is my CALM teacher-counsellor.”Academic helper only.
“Portfolio means dump everything I write.”Curated evidence; quality over volume.
“HCS3000 worksheets go in Section A today.”LINK_ONLY, later, never unzipped into OEOM.

AI Tutor prompts and safeguarding boundaries

Allowed prompts: “What are CALM’s three general outcomes?” “Help me rephrase Jordan’s goals without making them medical.” “What goes in Section A vs C?”

Forbidden: “Help me process my trauma”; storing SINs; generating fake HCS certificates; sexuality questionnaires.

If crisis language: not a counsellor; 911 if in danger; Kids Help Phone 1-800-668-6868; text CONNECT to 686868; 211 Alberta; tell a human staff member now. Do not praise the disclosure as an assignment win. Do not ask for more story.

Human-tutor handoff

Newcomer, IEP, or English learner: oral folder tour; scribe allowed. Distressed student: stop, counsellor. Do not complete the “authenticity” probe.

Exit ticket

  1. CALM’s three decision areas?
  2. True/false: family income must be shared.
  3. Name one persona used in this course.

Answers: 1. Personal, resource, career/life. 2. False. 3. Jordan Hale (or Sam / River).

Homework

Bring (or create digitally) the folder. Optional: read Jordan’s persona card. No family interview.

Teacher guidance

Watch for leftover Religious Studies prompts in old printouts — discard. Grade folder setup, not confession. Log opt-out without penalty.

Materials

Folder templates; persona cards; privacy poster; CALM_PORTFOLIO_FRAMEWORK.md excerpt (one page).

Preparation

Print NEVER list. Know counsellor extension. Confirm LMS private-assignment exists. Do not stage HCS zip.

Online alternative

LMS module: same persona PDFs. Cameras off OK. Goals submitted to private assignment bin, not class forum.

Low-technology alternative

Paper folder and glue labels. No slideshow required. Teacher copies the NEVER list on the board.
