Unit D: Quantitative Relationships in Chemical Changes - outcome 20-D2.3s

  • Course: CHEMISTRY20 (SCN2796)
  • Lesson ID: CHEMISTRY20-U4-L22
  • Official outcome: 20-D2.3s (SKILL)
  • Object type: canonical lesson (not a bootcamp session)
  • Source: Alberta Chemistry 20 Program of Studies (2007, updated 2014)

Official outcome text

analyze data and apply mathematical and conceptual models to develop and assess possible solutions • calculate theoretical and actual yield and percent yield and error, and account for discrepancies between the theoretical and actual yields (AI-NS3, AI-NS4) [ICT C6-4.1] • analyze and evaluate experimental data of a precipitation reaction to determine the concentration of a solution (AI-NS3, AI-NS4, AI-NS6) [ICT C7-4.2] • graph and analyze titration curves for acid-base experiments restricted to strong monoprotic acid-strong monoprotic base combinations (PR-NS4) • use appropriate SI notation, fundamental and derived units and significant digits when performing stoichiometric calculations (CT-ST2)

Learning intention

Meet 20-D2.3s with instruction, practice, and a check. The 10-session bootcamp does not replace this lesson.

Success criteria

  1. Restate the outcome in classroom language without swapping in a different unit’s template.
  2. Complete the worked-style task for this outcome.
  3. Name the lab setting (classroom-supervised / teacher demo / dataset or simulation / forbidden).

Teaching

Calculate theoretical/actual/percent yield and error; analyze precipitation concentration; graph strong-strong titration curves; SI and sig figs.

Worked example

From given masses: percent yield. From precipitation masses: concentration. From titration dataset: sketch curve and mark equivalence.

Guided practice

  1. Percent yield + discrepancy cause.
  2. Near-miss: calling end point the equivalence without comment.

Independent practice

  1. Precipitation concentration calculation.
  2. Curve sketch with labels.
  3. Sig figs justified.

Checks for understanding

Use the formative evidence below as the exit check for this outcome. Correct the misconception named in this lesson before praising.

Misconception to repair

Reporting >100% without diagnosis.

Safety and lab register

Setting: Paper analysis of given or school data. AI Tutor must not invent labs outside CHEM20_LOW_RESOURCE_LAB_REGISTER.csv.

Alberta Poison Control if a real exposure is occurring: 1-844-764-7669. The AI Tutor is not a poison centre.

Formative evidence

Yield calc + curve with equivalence marked.

This is not a diploma. Mastery needs instruction + activity + check.

AI Tutor / human tutor

Ground on 20-D2.3s. No false praise. No invented procedures. No silent skip to a different unit. Human tutor if the student describes mixing bleach, tasting, or flames.
