  • Course: CHEMISTRY20 (SCN2796)
  • Lesson ID: CHEMISTRY20-U3-L15

Official outcome text

explain how science and technology have both intended and unintended consequences for humans and the environment (SEC3) [ICT F3-4.1] • explain the significance of biomagnification in increasing the concentration of substances in an ecosystem

Learning intention

Meet 20-C1.4sts with instruction, practice, and a check. The 10-session bootcamp does not replace this lesson.

Success criteria

  1. Restate the outcome in classroom language without swapping in a different unit’s template.
  2. Complete the worked-style task for this outcome.
  3. Name the lab setting (classroom-supervised / teacher demo / dataset or simulation / forbidden).

Teaching

Unintended environmental consequences: some substances concentrate along food chains (biomagnification). Use a provided food-chain concentration card - do not invent local Indigenous claims.

Worked example

Card: water 1× → plankton 10× → fish 100× → predator bird 1000× (illustrative). Student explains why top predators show higher tissue levels for a persistent solute.

Guided practice

  1. Add one sentence on why water solubility and persistence matter (qualitative).
  2. Near-miss: FNMI fishing story invented. Hold FNMI_LOCAL_REVIEW.

Independent practice

  1. Explain the card in four sentences.
  2. Two sentences: intended use vs unintended concentration.
  3. Cite the card as illustrative, not a local measurement.

Diagram / whiteboard

Approved diagram id chem20-ph-scale - pH scale / solution concentration axes. Tutor may open the course whiteboard and display this id. Do not invent hazardous procedures on the board.

Checks for understanding

Use the formative evidence below as the exit check for this outcome. Correct the misconception named in this lesson before praising.

Misconception to repair

Claiming all solutes biomagnify equally.

Safety and lab register

Setting: Paper. No field sampling required. AI Tutor must not invent labs outside CHEM20_LOW_RESOURCE_LAB_REGISTER.csv.

Alberta Poison Control if a real exposure is occurring: 1-844-764-7669. The AI Tutor is not a poison centre.

Formative evidence

Biomagnification explanation from the pack card.

This is not a diploma. Mastery needs instruction + activity + check.

AI Tutor / human tutor

Ground on 20-C1.4sts. No false praise. No invented procedures. No silent skip to a different unit. Human tutor if the student describes mixing bleach, tasting, or flames.
