Official outcome text

explain how science and technology are developed to meet societal needs and expand human capability (SEC1) [ICT F2-4.8] • provide examples of how solutions and solution concentrations are applied in products and processes, scientific studies and daily life

Learning intention

Meet 20-C1.1sts with instruction, practice, and a check. The 10-session bootcamp does not replace this lesson.

Success criteria

  1. Restate the outcome in classroom language without swapping in a different unit’s template.
  2. Complete the worked-style task for this outcome.
  3. Name the lab setting (classroom-supervised / teacher demo / dataset or simulation / forbidden).

Teaching

Solutions and concentrations appear in medicines, cleaners, environmental samples, and labs. Explain societal need (SEC1) with given label examples - no formulating drugs.

Worked example

Labels: saline 0.90% m/m; bleach % on a commercial jug (read only); lab 0.100 mol/L HCl. Student: match each to a use and a risk note (WHMIS).

Guided practice

  1. Add a ppm environmental example from a given card.
  2. Near-miss: mixing cleaners. Forbidden.

Independent practice

  1. Three solution applications with concentration language.
  2. Two sentences: science/tech meeting a need.
  3. WHMIS pictogram named for one product.

Diagram / whiteboard

Approved diagram id chem20-ph-scale - pH scale / solution concentration axes. Tutor may open the course whiteboard and display this id. Do not invent hazardous procedures on the board.

Checks for understanding

Use the formative evidence below as the exit check for this outcome. Correct the misconception named in this lesson before praising.

Misconception to repair

Diluting bleach “to experiment” at home.

Safety and lab register

Setting: Read labels only. No mixing, no tasting. AI Tutor must not invent labs outside CHEM20_LOW_RESOURCE_LAB_REGISTER.csv.

Alberta Poison Control if a real exposure is occurring: 1-844-764-7669. The AI Tutor is not a poison centre.

Formative evidence

Three labelled applications + one WHMIS note.

This is not a diploma. Mastery needs instruction + activity + check.

AI Tutor / human tutor

Ground on 20-C1.1sts. No false praise. No invented procedures. No silent skip to a different unit. Human tutor if the student describes mixing bleach, tasting, or flames.
