Chemistry 20 - Build molecular models and record

LESSON = canonical instructional unit covering official Chemistry 20 outcomes. SESSION = bootcamp delivery event. A bootcamp session may overlay several Unit A lessons.

Unit A: Diversity of Matter and Chemical Bonding - outcome 20-A2.2s

  • Course: CHEMISTRY20 (SCN2796)
  • Lesson ID: CHEMISTRY20-U1-L28
  • Official outcome: 20-A2.2s (SKILL)
  • Object type: canonical lesson (not a bootcamp session)
  • Source: Alberta Chemistry 20 Program of Studies (2007, updated 2014)

Official outcome text

conduct investigations into relationships among observable variables and use a broad range of tools and techniques to gather and record data and information • build models depicting the structure of simple covalent molecules, including selected organic compounds (CT-NS2) • carry out an investigation to determine the melting or boiling point of a molecular substance (PR-NS3, PR-NS5) • use a thermometer and a conductivity apparatus to collect data (PR-NS2) • carry out an investigation to compare the physical properties of molecular substances (PR-NS3) [ICT F1-4.2]

Learning intention

Meet 20-A2.2s with instruction, practice, and a check. The 10-session bootcamp does not replace this lesson.

Success criteria

  1. Restate the outcome in classroom language without swapping in a different unit’s template.
  2. Complete the worked-style task for this outcome.
  3. Name the lab setting (classroom-supervised / teacher demo / dataset or simulation / forbidden).

Teaching

Perform: model kits or pipe cleaners for H2O, CH4, CO2; optional school MP apparatus only if teacher-scheduled - otherwise table. Thermometer/conductivity only under school rules.

Worked example

Record: photos/drawings of three models with shape labels; one row from BP data card; note “no flame used.”

Guided practice

  1. Complete three labelled models.
  2. Near-miss: open ammonia bottle as VSEPR “real molecule.” Not this pack.

Independent practice

  1. Add OF2 or NH3 as a fourth model.
  2. Allergy/latex note if balloons used.
  3. Source of BP numbers named.

Diagram / whiteboard

Approved diagram id chem20-ionic-lattice - Ionic lattice / bonding sketch. Tutor may open the course whiteboard and display this id. Do not invent hazardous procedures on the board.

Checks for understanding

Use the formative evidence below as the exit check for this outcome. Correct the misconception named in this lesson before praising.

Misconception to repair

Eating marshmallow models in a lab room / latex balloons if allergy.

Safety and lab register

Setting: CHEM20-LR-07-VSEPR rules. No latex if allergy. No open hazardous bottles. AI Tutor must not invent labs outside CHEM20_LOW_RESOURCE_LAB_REGISTER.csv.

Alberta Poison Control if a real exposure is occurring: 1-844-764-7669. The AI Tutor is not a poison centre.

Formative evidence

Three models + one data-card row.

This is not a diploma. Mastery needs instruction + activity + check.

AI Tutor / human tutor

Ground on 20-A2.2s. No false praise. No invented procedures. No silent skip to a different unit. Human tutor if the student describes mixing bleach, tasting, or flames.
