Official outcome text

explain that the goal of science is knowledge about the natural world (NS1) • identify everyday processes and products in which ionic compounds are significant, such as in the composition of household products and foods and in life processes

Learning intention

Meet 20-A1.1sts with instruction, practice, and a check. The 10-session bootcamp does not replace this lesson.

Success criteria

  1. Restate the outcome in classroom language without swapping in a different unit’s template.
  2. Complete the worked-style task for this outcome.
  3. Name the lab setting (classroom-supervised / teacher demo / dataset or simulation / forbidden).

Teaching

Science aims at knowledge of the natural world. Ionic compounds appear in ordinary composition: NaCl in food, NaHCO3 in baking powder, CaCO3 in limestone and bone mineral, electrolytes in sports drinks. The point is identification and ion names - not mixing cleaners.

Worked example

Table: product → main ionic compound → ions. (1) table salt → NaCl → Na+, Cl−. (2) baking soda → NaHCO3 → Na+, HCO3−. (3) chalk / antacid calcium carbonate → CaCO3 → Ca2+, CO32−. Science goal sentence: we learn these formulas to explain composition, not to invent home reactions.

Guided practice

  1. Add two more rows: plaster (CaSO4·2H2O) and a labelled sports-drink Na+/K+ claim from a nutrition panel (given numbers only).
  2. Near-miss: a student plans bleach + vinegar “to show ions.” Mark the forbidden line and redirect to the lab register.

Independent practice

  1. Three everyday ionic products with ions, not copied from the worked table.
  2. Two sentences: NS1 (knowledge of nature) vs a technology how-to.
  3. Setting: paper / labels only.

Diagram / whiteboard

Approved diagram id chem20-ionic-lattice - Ionic lattice / bonding sketch. Tutor may open the course whiteboard and display this id. Do not invent hazardous procedures on the board.

Checks for understanding

Use the formative evidence below as the exit check for this outcome. Correct the misconception named in this lesson before praising.

Misconception to repair

Treating “ionic in household products” as permission to mix bleach, ammonia, or acids.

Safety and lab register

Setting: Paper and sealed consumer labels only. Forbidden: bleach+acid, bleach+ammonia, tasting, opening cleaners to “test.” Use CHEM20_LOW_RESOURCE_LAB_REGISTER.csv. AI Tutor must not invent labs outside CHEM20_LOW_RESOURCE_LAB_REGISTER.csv.

Alberta Poison Control if a real exposure is occurring: 1-844-764-7669. The AI Tutor is not a poison centre.

Formative evidence

Completed three-row ionic product table + one NS1 sentence.

This is not a diploma. Mastery needs instruction + activity + check.

AI Tutor / human tutor

Ground on 20-A1.1sts. No false praise. No invented procedures. No silent skip to a different unit. Human tutor if the student describes mixing bleach, tasting, or flames.
